Test Before You Spec: The Water Test That Starts Every Water Job

Step 1 of the Roadmap. What to test for, what each result means, reading a city's water report next to the live tap test, and why equipment never comes first.

The short answer: the first thing Water CheatCode teaches — before a single piece of equipment — is the test. Hardness, iron, manganese, pH, TDS, chlorine or chloramine, hydrogen sulfide, nitrate, arsenic, bacteria. The water tells you what the problem is; the problem tells you the technology; the technology tells you the equipment; the equipment gets sized to the home. Reverse that order and you'll sell a softener to a house with an iron problem and eat the callback. Problem → test → technology → equipment → sizing. Pick your lane first

Step 1 has two halves. The first is a decision: are you adding water to a home-service business you already run, or starting a water company from scratch? It changes your first ninety days completely. A plumber or HVAC company adding water starts with existing customers and a tech who tests on every call; a from-scratch dealer starts with lead generation and the kitchen-table sale. What you test for, and what each one is telling you

Every in-home test kit and lab panel covers some version of this list. Here's what each result means in the homeowner's house.

Hardness — dissolved calcium and magnesium, measured in grains per gallon. It's the scale in the water heater, the spots on the glass, the crust on the showerhead, the dry skin. Not a health issue; a money issue. A softener's job.

Iron — the orange staining in the tub and toilet, the metallic taste, the ruined laundry. Comes in dissolved (clear water that stains later) and precipitated (already rust-colored) forms, and the form decides the treatment. Iron also fouls softener resin, which is why it gets handled before the softener.

Manganese — iron's cousin: black or brown staining, often alongside iron in well water. Treated by the same family of oxidizing media.

pH — acidity. Low pH water is aggressive: it eats copper plumbing (blue-green stains), pinholes pipes, and some media won't work outside their pH range. Fixed early, with calcite or corosex, before anything else.

TDS — total dissolved solids, read on a meter in ppm. A quick, visual, honest number that says how much is dissolved in the water. High TDS is a reverse-osmosis conversation at the kitchen sink.

Chlorine / chloramine — the city's disinfectant. Taste, smell, dry skin and hair — and chlorine above about 1 ppm oxidizes and destroys softener resin, so on city water carbon goes before the softener. Chloramine needs catalytic carbon; regular carbon barely touches it.

Hydrogen sulfide — the rotten-egg smell on well water. Oxidize it out with the iron, or catalytic carbon for mild cases.

Nitrate — fertilizer and agricultural runoff, a serious issue for infants. Nitrate-selective resin or RO.

Arsenic — naturally occurring in groundwater in a lot of the country. RO or activated alumina.

Bacteria — coliform and E. coli on well water. UV, last in the train, on already-clear water.

You don't need to memorize the chemistry. You need to know what each number means for the family at the sink, and which technology answers it. That's step 2.

The two tests: the city's report and the live tap

For a home on city water, you have something most reps never use: the utility's own annual water-quality report. Every community water system publishes one (the Consumer Confidence Report), listing exactly what was detected, the legal limit, and the health goal. It's public, it's free, and almost nobody reads it.

The Water CheatCode approach is to bring both into the kitchen: the city's report — their data, not your opinion — and a live test on their own tap. Show the report, run the test, and go quiet. For well water there's no city report, which is fine — the free in-home test is the strongest well-water angle there is. Test on-site for the basics; send a sample to a lab for the things a strip can't read (arsenic, nitrate, bacteria), especially before you spec a system.

The honesty rule

Only ever say what's literally in the report or on the test. "Detected" isn't "illegal," and you never imply anyone's sick. You're a guide reading the homeowner their own data. That's what builds the trust that closes — and it keeps you on the right side of the ad platforms and the law.

Why "test first" is the whole business

Skip the test and every downstream step is a guess: the wrong media, the wrong size, the wrong price, a presentation the homeowner can argue with, and a callback when the iron fouls the resin. Test first and every step gets easier: the equipment picks itself, the sizing has real numbers, the presentation is their own data, and the install works the first time.

It's also your best sales tool. A rep with a test kit isn't selling; they're diagnosing. Homeowners let diagnosticians in the door.

What's the difference between hardness and contaminants?

Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium — a scale, spotting and appliance-damage problem, not a health rule, fixed by a softener. Contaminants like lead, arsenic, nitrate and disinfection byproducts are health concerns, typically handled by RO at the point of use or targeted media. Most homes need both conversations.
